Smaerends

Smaerends—usually called Halflings—are the shortest of the Near-Humans and tend to be a bit stocky. Unlike their close allies, they cannot grow facial hair. The head on their head, however, is usually dark and curly, similar to that on their feet.

Most Smaerends are merchants or tradesmen, explaining their close alliance with the Dwarves. The Dwarves craft or mine the products that the Halflings sell, which benefits both parties involved. Few Halflings involve themselves in war and those who do are usually tinkerers or suppliers to the effort, rather than soldiers—though that does happen on occasion. There is a growing number of dishonest Smaerends that use their charismatic salesman abilities to con and swindle the gullible or trusting. They may sell them a random bauble, labeling it as some sort of valuable artifact or they may sell an amazing gadget that serves no actual purpose and has no function.

The skin on a Halfling’s feet is tougher and thicker than anywhere else on its body. This allows it to more easily traverse its mountain homelands, where the hair on their feet keep them warm against the icecaps. Most Halflings have a nearly insatiable appetite and a love for fine food and drink, which makes some come off as jovial hosts and others appear as slobs.
